Around Town – Chattanooga, Tennessee (U.S.A.)

I took a trip back to my hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee in December of last year. After a 20-year absence (due to traveling the world and living in Japan), I naturally thought that many things would have changed, leaving the city of my childhood completely unrecognizable.

Much to my surprise, however, although there have clearly been some significant improvements in city infrastructure, technology, business, and urban development, everything was basically still the same as I remember!

In this segment of Around Town – Chattanooga, Tennessee (U.S.A.) we`ll be looking at some of the popular tourist spots and attractions in the Tennessee area.

The Tennessee Aquarium (Wikipedia)

The Tennessee Aquarium is a non-profit public aquarium located in ChattanoogaTennesseeUnited States. It opened in 1992 on the banks of the Tennessee River in downtown Chattanooga, with a major expansion added in 2005. The Aquarium, which has been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1993, is home to more than 12,000 animals representing almost 800 species.[5][6]

More than 20 million people have visited the facility, with the twenty-millionth visitor arriving in March 2013.[7] It is consistently recognized as one of the country’s top public aquariums.

Lookout Mountain (www.lookoutmountain.com)

Just minutes from downtown Chattanooga, TN, Lookout Mountain is the perfect destination for out-of-the-ordinary experiences and amazing natural wonders.

Lookout Mountain is home to three top-rated, world-famous attractions that showcase the natural and historic beauty of the area, each with breathtaking views of the Tennessee Valley.  Trek through Rock City’s natural wonders and “See Seven States” views, discover Ruby Falls, the tallest and deepest underground waterfall open to the public in the United States, and ride the Incline Railway, one of the world’s steepest passenger railways.

This point is also very popular for hang-gliding!

Create memories you’ll treasure. Visit Lookout Mountain, and experience “Mountains of Fun”!

Chattanooga Choo-choo (www.chattanoogafun.com)

All Aboard! Opened in 1909 as Terminal Station, the train depot welcomed thousands of travelers during the golden age of railroads. Today, Terminal Station stands as part of the world-famous Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel.

History and hospitality are at the heart of the Chattanooga Choo Choo. The complex boasts on-site dining, retail shops, tranquil rose gardens, and much more.

Guests can overnight in beautifully restored authentic sleeper cars, once reserved for only the wealthiest of passengers during the railroad era. There is again the bustle that was so familiar in the railroad days at Chattanooga’s Terminal Station. For generations, Chattanooga’s Terminal Station has been a place of many memories made and it continues to be today.

Ruby Falls (www.lookoutmountain.com)

Discover wonder at Ruby Falls, a favorite destination for 89 years and home to the tallest and deepest underground waterfall open to the public in the United States. Descend 26 stories by elevator and explore the scenic cavern path on a guided tour to the breathtaking waterfall – 1,120 feet underground! See ancient geological formations plus learn about the cave’s storied history.  Take in panoramic views of the Tennessee Valley and Tennessee River from Lookout Mountain Tower, Blue Heron Overlook, and the Village Plaza.

Extend your visit to include ZIPStream Aerial Adventure, featuring a 40 foot climbing tower and 700 feet of rushing zip lines with amazing views of the Tennessee Valley.

There is always something new to learn, discover, and experience at Ruby Falls with events and tours throughout the year.

Outdoor Activities (www.chattanoogafun.com)

Chattanooga has always been known as a premier outdoor destination— Lonely Planet designated Chattanooga the “Best in the U.S.” in 2018.  With access to some of the nation’s top venues for rock climbing, road and mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, white-water rafting, hang gliding, and more, all within a short drive of downtown, the Chattanooga outdoors offers unique opportunities for even the most hardcore outdoor enthusiasts.

Looking for something a little less adventurous? That’s OK, too. You can take a bike ride or leisurely stroll down Chattanooga’s beautiful 13-mile Riverwalk that runs along the Tennessee River, enjoy a picnic in one of the many parks and so much more. Check out the city of Chattanooga’s new parks locator map here. You can also explore Tennessee’s Grand Canyon using the Tennessee River Gorge outdoor recreation map created by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

There are two search functions on this page to help you find the ultimate adventure! Use the search below to find guided outdoor adventures such as rafting, hang gliding, and kayak and SUP rentals. Or use the RootsRated search to find self-guided adventures such as the best hiking or mountain biking spots around Chattanooga. Enjoy!

Fishing On The Tennessee River

Tennessee is actually one of the best fishing states in America. With clean river water from the Tennessee River as well as over 30 ponds and lakes in the area, Tennessee has a very large variety of frest water fish that are perfect for sport.

And most of them taste as good as they look!

Here are some pictures of my father and I fishing at the Chickamauga Dam which is located on the Tennessee River. We were fishing for black bass, crappie, and bluegill. Of course, I caught absolutely nothing while my father caught… well, a lot.

After that, we fried them up and ate them with traditional Boston Baked Beans, mixed salad, and washed it all down with a chaser of A&W Root Beer.

Very good Southern cooking indeed!

Southern Belle River Boat Ride (chattanoogariverboat.com)

The Southern Belle Riverboat started out with a simple vision: give a great guest experience of Chattanooga, show everyone the beauty of the river, and give everyone a different perspective of the city of Chattanooga. If you know about us, you know that message is still the same; the boat crew at The Southern Belle Riverboat still strives to give you a great cruise, great service, and a great experience.

Hamilton Place Mall

Chattanooga is not exactly a “shopping paradise” per se, but that does not mean that you will not be able to find whatever you need whenever you need it. Besides a huge Walmart Shopping Complex and a few other shopping areas, Chattanooga also has Hamilton Place Mall, which is a large shopping mall that carries everything from toys and car parts to popular brand-name goods. Located around 30 minutes by car from the main Chattanooga Downtown area, Hamilton Place is your go-to spot for picing up pricier, top-quality goods.

And there`s your overview of my hometown, Chattanooga, TN.

Japanese tourists rarely make it down that far south when traveling in the U.S. because it takes about 17 hours from Narita to Chattanooga, usually with a layover in Chicago, Dallas, or San Fransisco. So hopefully this article will prove to be a good source of information when it comes to finding things to do in the U.S. beyond hanging out in coastal cities or just visiting the common/popular tourist destinations.

If you`re looking for a nice, friendly, and peaceful place with a quiet environment, great weather, and a lot of stuff to do outdoors, Tennessee is the place to be.

Until next time!  (^_^)v
