Minakami Onsen Gunma!

This year we decided on a trip to Minakami Onsen in Gunma Prefecture for our long, 10-day Golden Week Holiday! It was a very good and relaxing trip for a family of four! Here are just a few of the nice things that you can do there!

Climate & Economy:

Gunma is one of the most beautiful and scenic areas of Japan that many people head off to during the holiday season. The area has a lot of natural onsens (hot springs) and is surrounded by a few different mountain ranges. The Minakami hot spring that we went to sits right in a valley in the middle of these mountains. One of the most famous mountains that can be seen from here is Mt. Tanigawa, which is part of the Mikuni Mountain range. If you are looking for a nice, quiet family getaway spot, this might be the place for you.

Climate-wise, Gunma is typically colder than Tokyo during most of the year. It is an especially good place to visit during the spring and autumn seasons. Unlike other resort locations in the area, Minakami doesn`t seem to get as crowded due to the fact that, other than hot springs and a few outdoor river activities, there`s not really too much else to do in this area which makes it perfect for a slow and relaxing time without feeling rushed to do anything in particular. You can pretty much take things at your own pace here. As a matter of fact, on the very last day of our stay, once the initial rush of customers left on the hotel buses, my family and I had the entire hotel to completely ourselves for almost 3 hours!

Minakami is relatively easy to access from Tokyo. It only took us 3 hours from JR Ueno Station using the JR Takasaki Local Line, which stops at every station from. Since we didn`t use the Shinkansen (Bullet train) for this trip, the train was admittedly a little packed with few seats available for most of the ride until we reached our transfer point at Takasaki. So if you`re traveling with small children or the elderly and you`ve decided to try using the local train in order to save a little money, I wouldn`t recommend using this method as you might find yourself standing most of the way there. But it was fine for us!

From Takasaki Station, we transferred to the JR Joetsu Line which was a straight shot to Minakami. One short, 5-minute bus ride away and we were safely at our hotel!

If you`re looking for a good, low-key vacation spot to visit for Golden Week next year, Minakami is definitely a place you`ll want to check out!
